Who We Are

Who We Are, Generally Speaking

Permanent General Companies, Inc. – or just The General® for short – is a licensed insurance agency with a focus on automobile insurance. We are the only nationwide carrier specializing in the non-standard auto insurance industry. (More on that in the next section, What We Do.

We’re proud to say we’ve been in the insurance business for over 50 years. In 2013, The General® was acquired by American Family Insurance, or AmFam, a Fortune 500 company based in Madison, Wisconsin.

Though we now have major backing, The General® takes pride in maintaining the agility of a fast-growing midsized company. In fact, within the space of five years, we’ve DOUBLED our size. We went from being a $265 million company in 2012, to a $551 million company in 2016.

History of The General

Chances are you’ve seen our advertising featuring our distinct mascot named – what else? - The General®. In case you’re curious, here’s a brief history of our favorite officer.


April 1997

The company begins offering its insurance product as The General®, and the world meets our spokesperson, The General, for the first time.



November 2000

The General® gets a makeover. (Remember those first cell phones?)



December 2000

The General's name logo gets a graphic treatment.



April 2001

The General's gets a new slogan:
Auto insurance for less, The General says Yes!®



March 2007

The General® is now in 3-D, no glasses required.



February 2011

Hooray! The General® gets a slick new phone! Perfect timing since we launched our mobile site in April 2011.



January 2013

The General® gets his most recent makeover. He wanted to look his best to welcome our new owners, American Family Insurance®!



July 2016

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal joins The General® on nationwide television commercials to help bring affordable car insurance to the people.
