Job Summary

Perform various functions related to month-end accounting close, account reconciliations, year-end close and statutory filings. Additional responsibilities will include expense variance analysis, budget preparation, maintenance of fixed asset system, maintenance of automated processes within the department and various other regulatory filings

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly journal entries & upload into the general ledger the various entries as requested by others within the accounting department to ensure proper segregation of duties.
  • Prepare monthly / quarterly account reconciliations in accordance with the account reconciliation checklist and potentially review account reconciliations which are prepared by others. As part of the reconciliation process, outstanding reconciling items should be researched and corrected prior to subsequent month-end close.
  • Assist in maintaining internal controls to remain in compliance with the Model Audit Rule as it pertains to accounting processes and procedures. 
  • Gradually assume the responsibility of preparing the monthly expense variance analysis. Additional analysis duties will be required upon implementation of a new budgeting and forecasting system. 
  • Responsibilities will also include preparing annual and quarterly premium tax filings for various states in accordance with state guidelines and by set deadlines to avoid paying interest and other penalties. Additional regulatory responsibilities will include; municipal filings, sales and use tax filings, property tax reporting, assisting with unclaimed property filings and assisting in the preparation of the various income tax filings. 
  • Coordinate and manage the reporting of Unclaimed Property using Tracker software. This includes periodically monitoring bank recs for reportable property and managing the collection and reclass to the liability account.  This responsibility includes filing reports with all states in which property is reportable as deadlines arise throughout the year. 
  • Position will also be responsible for being a backup to other accounting personnel when needed. 
  • Assist in the implementation of a new budgeting and forecasting system, and when implemented, assist in the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Assist in the implementation of a new General Ledger system (Workday) and also will support various automated processes within the department. 
  • Responsible for preparing monthly trial balances for our parent company and with the preparation of the various statutory statements and related filings on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • May perform other accounting duties related to month-end close and monthly account reconciliations as needed.

Job Requirements

Experience/Skills Requirements

  • Three to five years of accounting experience required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office required especially strong Excel skills and preferably some MS Access and/or Alteryx skills.
  • Position requires the ability to perform basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Ability to collect, compile and organize facts, figures and/or other information in accordance with general accounting guidelines and established company procedures.
  • Position requires the ability to provide oral and written communication regarding specific accounting issues.  

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience required.
